Mondrian Los Angeles[edit] The original Mondrian Hotel is located on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. The structure was built in 1959 as an apartment building. It was later renovated and reopened in 1985 as the Le Mondrian by the L'Ermitage Hotel Group. The outside of Le Mondrian featured a commissioned work by Yaacov Agam entitled L'Hommage a Mondrian which covered the hotel's 9 story exterior. As of November 2014 room rates begin at $365 per night.[1] Le Mondrian was later purchased by Ian Schrager and his Morgans Hotel Group in 1996 and renamed Mondrian Hotel Los Angeles.[2] In 2008, Morgans Hotel Group commissioned designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz to update the hotel.[3] In April 2011, Morgans Hotel Group reached a deal to sell the Mondrian Los Angeles to Pebblebrook Hotel Trust for $137 million. Morgans Hotel Group will continue to manage the hotel under a 20-year agreement.[4] On November 30, 2016, Morgans Hotel Group, including the Mondrian Los Angeles, was acquired by SBE Entertainment Group for $805 million.[5]

Mondrian South Beach[edit] In 2008, Morgans Hotel Group opened a new Mondrian in Miami Beach, Florida. The South Beach location contains hotel residences, a spa, and the Sunset Lounge.[2]

Mondrian London[edit] Mondrian London At Sea Containers hotel opened its doors on September 2014.[6]

Other locations[edit] Further two Mondrian hotels are scheduled to open in 2015, in Doha[7] and Istanbul.[8] Morgans Hotel Group bought the James Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2006 and converted it into the Mondrian Scottsdale. In 2010, Bank of America began foreclosure proceedings against Morgans Hotel Group, and the lender seized the property after Morgans defaulted on its loan and no bids were submitted for the hotel.[9] The Sydell Group took over ownership upon its purchase of the property in February 2011 and assigned Joie de Vivre Hospitality to manage the hotel.[10] The former Mondrian Scottsdale is currently branded as The Saguaro and is no longer affiliated with Morgans Hotel Group.[11] The Mondrian Las Vegas was included in plans for the Echelon development on the Las Vegas Strip, along with Delano Las Vegas, another Morgans Hotel Group property.[12] Boyd Gaming suspended the construction of the Echelon in 2008 and anticipates resuming the project in 3–5 years.[13] The project was canceled in March 2013. In 2007, Morgans Hotel Group and M Development, a Chicago developer, entered into a joint venture to build and operate a Mondrian Hotel in the Gold Coast district of Chicago, Illinois on the site of the existing Cedar Hotel.[14] Morgans Hotel Group would own 49% of the joint venture and would also operate the Mondrian Chicago. Although the company contributed $2.3 million to the project as of September 2008, construction has yet to commence on the property.[15][16]

Mondrian Los Angeles in popular culture[edit] The wrap party of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was held at the Mondrian in 1999. Images of the party at the Mondrian can be seen in the season seven DVD of the series.[17] On December 4, 2007, rapper Pimp C was found dead in his hotel room. One of the main characters in William Gibson's 2007 novel Spook Country stays at the Mondrian while in Los Angeles on business. Britney Spears documentary Britney: For the Record, was filmed at the Mondrian Hotel. Several episodes of the HBO series Entourage were filmed on-location at the Mondrian. The hotel is also featured in the 2009 video for "All Up 2 You", performed by Akon, Aventura and Wisin & Yandel In the song "Neighbours Next Door" by Dr. Dooom, he says "Lookin' out your Mondrian Hotel window, like Elvis Presley coming down the elevator." In the Family Guy third instalment of Star Wars parody "Episode VI It's a trap", about 16:11 into the episode, the character played by Angela thanks her audience for meeting her "in the lobby of the Mondrian", drawing a comparison between the Mondrian Miami lobby's futuristic design and the interior of a Star Wars spaceship. In the song "Places to Go" by 50 Cent 50 Cent, he references the hotel: "Matter of fact you gotta send it to Sunset Blvd up in the Mondrian"
